The 2019 IWC Pilot collection explained!
For IWC, 2019 is the year of the pilot's watch. The Schaffhausen-based brand presented 16 variations at the SIHH fair in Geneva in a host of sizes, colors and materials. In this post we'll go over the particularities of each of them - from the largest right down to the smallest.
IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition 'Rodeo Drive' IW503001
The IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition 'Rodeo Drive' has a ceramic case of 46.5mm, which makes it 1.5mm smaller (or less big?) than the earlier Big Pilot's Perpetual Calendar (IW5029) in ceramic. While the colors are identical to those used on the earlier Rodeo Drive edition (sans perpetual), the case is matte rather than glossy. It is powered by the twin-barrel caliber 52615 movement. It is not a limited edition.
The IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition 'Rodeo Drive' IW503001 is available for pre-order in our eBoutique.
IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Spitfire IW503601
The IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Spitfire is powered by the same caliber 56215, though at 46.2 it is slightly smaller. The bronze case is paired with a green dial - a rather handsome combination of which we'll see more in this post. The movement can be seen through the case back.
IWC Big Pilot's Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition 'Le Petit Prince'
Also coming in at 46.2mm is the Big Pilot's Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition 'Le Petit Prince', available in either hardened red gold or platinum. The movement is based on the one used in the Ingenieur Constant Force of 2013.

IWC Pilot's Watch Timezoner Spitfire Edition 'The Longest Flight' IW395501
The IWC Pilot's Watch Timezoner Spitfire Edition 'The Longest Flight' mixes the UTC-look of days gone by with IWC's cool Timezoner mechanism, which allows one to adjust the timezone by rotating the bezel. While we're now past the 'Big' Pilot's, this comes in at a still respectable 46mm. It is powered by the in-house caliber 82760 and limited to 250 pieces.
IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition 'Mojave Desert' IW389103
The IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition 'Mojave Desert' has a sand-colored ceramic case of 44.5mm, which is said to be inspired by the Mojave Desert, home to the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station of the US Navy. This is paired with a brown dial and a sand-colored strap - a strikingly novel look. Inside is the in-house caliber 69380. This one is limited to 500 pieces.
IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun IW389101
The Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun IW389101 is essentially the regular version of the watch above, decked-out in the classic 'Top Gun' black on black (on black) colors.
IWC Pilot's Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium IW371815
The split seconds complication is as emblematic to IWC as black-cased pilot's watches - and their arguably best when consumed together. The IW371815 however does not have a case in ceramic, but rather Ceratanium - a proprietary form of hard, wear-free and scratch-resistant titanium. It is powered by the 79420 movement.
IWC Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Edition 'Le Petit Prince' IW392202
The IWC Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Edition 'Le Petit Prince' has a red gold case of 43mm and the signature LPP blue dial. Inside is the 89360 movement, which was previously exclusive to the 3921 Da Vinci's. It features both a perpetual calendar as well as a flyback chronograph.
IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Spitfire IW387902
We're now down to 41mm, and next up is the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Spitfire. Dressed up as reference IW387902 it features a bronze case and green dial. It is powered by the in-house caliber 69380 chronograph movement. It is not a limited edition.
IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Spitfire IW387901
Not feeling the whole bronze thing? IWC's got you covered with the IW387901. It features a classic stainless steel case and black dial - and looks just like a modern 3706! This too is powered by caliber 69380.
IWC Pilot's Watch UTC Spitfire Edition 'MJ271' IW327101
The IWC Pilot's Watch UTC Spitfire Edition 'MJ271' marks this year's second appearance of the UTC style second timezone display. Here it is seen in a bronze case of 41mm, limited to just 271 pieces - MJ271 was the original call sign of the "Silver Spitfire" during its time of service. Inside is the in-house 82710 movement with a power reserve of 60 hours.
IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic Top Gun IW326901
The IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic Top Gun is IWC Top Gun stripped down to it's essence, resulting in a instrumental and pure look. The matte black ceramic case measures 41mm and houses the in-house caliber 32110
IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic Spitfire IW326802
The IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic Spitfire IW326802 completes our list of bronze watches for today. This one has a case of 39mm, again housing the in-house caliber 32110.
IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic Spitfire IW326801
IWC gives you the option of either bronze or stainless steel with the Spitfire Automatic just like with the Spitfire Chrono. The IW326801 is of course the stainless steel version. Doesn't it look just timeless? Size and movement are identical to the bronze.
IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic 36 IW324010
One for the purists? The IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic 36 is not new, but this version is. Contrary to earlier iterations this is fully brushed and has the simple black dial of its larger siblings. All the cool of the big ones, but now in a svelte 36mm!
Now - what's your favorite....?
