We just came back from the SIHH where we visited IWC, Baume & Mercier and Montblanc. All three brands surprised us with stunning new watches. To kick it off we will start with IWC. IWC changed the whole Pilot collection. Not just the models, but way the collection works as well. Before we had the Pilot's Watches and the Spitfires. The Spitfire watches, basically were Pilot's with a different dial. From 2012, the Spitfires are the high-end models of the Pilot family and are recognized by the ardoise dial. The ardoise dials used to be exclusively for white (and later red) gold IWC's, within the Pilot family they now tell you that you are dealing with a manufacture watch. The most impressive Spitfire, and probably new IWC, is the Spitfire Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month. A Perpetual calendar with crown-activated rapid advance, large double-digit displays for both the date and month, Leap year display, Flyback chronograph function with hours, minutes and seconds and hour and minute counters combined in a single totalizer at 12 o'clock. And it's not only brains, the new Spitfire is a beautiful watch as well.
Everybody expected the Mark XVII and Pilot Chronograph to get bigger and they did. The style of both watches remained the same. The design team only changed some details, like the date window and the seconds display on the dial of the Chronograph. Also notice the new Pilot style alligator straps!
The new Spitfire vs the new Pilot Chronograph
Back in the collection is the Pilot's Watch Double Chronograph. With 46mm it's the same size as the classic Big Pilot.
Not only the watches got bigger, the buckles went up in size as well:
The new Pilot’s Watch Worldtimer (Ref.3262) from IWC Schaffhausen has a 24-hour ring that enables the wearer to read quickly and easily all 24 time zones, including Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). The city ring on the Pilot’s Watch Worldtimer bears the names of 23 places around the globe, each of which represents one time zone. With its soft iron inner case it is a true Pilot's Watch!
The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Miramar from IWC Schaffhausen is equipped with one of the most advanced and robust chronograph movements available, the manufacture 89365 calibre. The high-quality Top Gun engraving on the titanium case back of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Miramar is a tribute to the world’s best pilots and an indication that this is the technological highlight of IWC’s Pilot’s Watch family.
The Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN combines the clearcut instrument look of the 1940s with state-of-the-art watchmaking technology. The tiny silhouette of an aircraft on the seconds hand creates an eye-catching signal-red highlight on the black-and-white dial.
High-tech meets Haute Horlogerie: the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN from IWC Schaffhausen. The watch’s imposing ceramic case is a repository of some of watchmaking’s greatest-ever achievements. The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN from IWC Schaffhausen comes with a wealth of complex technological features. The IWC-manufactured movement with its 7-day power reserve drives a whole range of watchmaking complications. These include a perpetual calendar with four-digit year display together with date, day and month displays as well as a moon phase display. All the displays are easily adjusted via the crown.
